Looking for a new show to watch?

Family pointing at the tv from couch. Binge watching their favorite show

We’re all being encouraged to stay home to help stop the spread of COVID-19. While the outdoors aren’t off limits, social events are prohibited and many public places we might typically spend our free time are closed. That said, many of us probably have a lot of free time and binge watching shows seems to be a popular way to pass the time.

With many streaming services available, there are plenty of options for shows to get caught up in. Thankfully, most of these services are affordable, so if you don’t yet subscribe, now may be a good time. Let’s take a look at some offered streaming services and which shows you should start watching ASAP.

Netflix

Leading the industry as a powerhouse streaming service, Netflix features over 1,000 TV  binge watching options, including more than 100 original shows and movies. You’ve probably heard of quite a few of their available shows, with many of them being a Netflix original series. Ozark is perhaps one of the most watched series right now, with season 3 just launching. If you haven’t yet seen this addictive show, now is a great time to start. The show is focused on a financial advisor who drags his family from Chicago to the Missouri Ozarks, where he is forced to launder millions of dollars to appease a Mexican drug boss. Each episode leaves you on the edge of your seat! If you’re looking for something on the bizarre side, check out Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness. Perhaps one of the most talked about shows in recent weeks, this Netflix docuseries follows a zoo owner who spirals out of control amongst a cast of unconventional characters in a true murder-for-hire story from the underworld of big cat breeding. Another popular series is All American. Similar to Friday Night Lights, this CW shows follows a rising football player who is recruited to play at a different high school. Or, if you’re into reality food competitions, Nailed It allows bakers to create elaborate deserts way beyond their skillset.

This is just a tiny sample of the addicting shows Netflix has to offer.

Hulu

Hulu allows you to stream live tv and watch episodes of hundreds of shows, depending on your subscription. You can catch up on several popular network shows you never got a chance to start or finish, including Grey’s Anatomy, This Is Us and How to Get Away with Murder. Or you can check out a Hulu original series, like Little Fires Everywhere. This show is based on the best-selling novel and features Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington. The story intertwines the fates of the picture- perfect Richardson family and a mysterious mother and daughter who upend their lives. Another popular option, Ramy, follows the the son of Egyptian immigrants on a spiritually conflicting journey in his New Jersey neighborhood, pulled between his Muslim community that thinks life is an endless test, his millennial friends who think life is full of endless opportunities and a God who’s always observing.

Whatever your pleasure, Hulu is sure you have what you’re looking for!

Amazon Prime

With 40 million subscribers in the US, Amazon Prime streaming comes standard with an Amazon Prime subscription. So, if you’re paying to have your packages delivered more quickly, you can also watch some pretty awesome shows and movies without paying extra. Like other services, Amazon also has several original series shows. Perhaps the most popular is The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which focuses on a woman in New York City in the late 1950s, who decides to become a stand-up comedian after her husband leaves her. Another popular series, The Man in High Castle, is based on the novel. The show takes place in the 1960s, but in a different timeline where Nazi Germany and Japan won World War II and split control over the US coasts. This series follows several characters who discover a series of movies that show the US winning World War II. Another great suggestion is Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. This series stars John Krasinski as Jack Ryan, who is a young CIA analyst. He thinks he’s only going to be working behind a desk, but his discoveries lead him away from the office and into the field to try and stop an Islamic terrorist.

Prime streaming has a lot of great binge watching options, especially if you’re already paying for the delivery service!

Disney+

If you’re not into binge watching shows, but perhaps movies, then maybe Disney+ is the way to go. Described as the ultimate streaming destination for Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars & National Geographic, there is a library of more than 7,500 episodes and 500 films. From newer films like Onward, Frozen 2 and Avengers: Endgame, to classics like The Lion King, The Little Mermaid or Star Wars, you’re sure to find options for yourself and your kids.

If you’re looking into streaming apps, the viewing options they provide are pretty much endless. Now stay home, stay healthy and start binging!

We can all do our part to keep one another safe!

Creating a Remote Culture Amid “Social Distancing”

As many employees are being forced to work from home due to COVID-19, it can be easy to feel somewhat isolated from your job. Afterall, when you’re used to being surrounded by your coworkers each day, which allows you to share ideas, ask questions or simply socialize, you may feel like you’re missing out on something when you’re not with them. The same goes for students who are now finding themselves in virtual classes when they’re used to sitting in a lecture hall filled with classmates.

man working on computer

The good thing is, you’re not alone with this feeling. There are now more people than ever working remotely, as social distancing is the best way to avoid spreading the COVID-19 virus. So how can you create a remote culture when you’re not actually at work? It’s easier than you think.

  1. Stay connected. When you’re in the office, you often have touch points with your team members and manager on a regular basis. It’s important to stay updated on what everyone is working on, so make sure you’re having regular meetings with your team so you can stay informed.
  2. Make lunch plans. With video technology, it’s now possible to not only chat with your coworkers or classmates, but to see them too. It’s almost as good as seeing them in person. If lunch doesn’t work, you can plan for a chat over coffee or a study session with your classmates. If you’re a manager or team lead, consider sending virtual gift cards to your team for GrubHub or UberEats as an extra perk so you can buy them lunch without actually having to provide it.
  3. Plan a virtual learning session. Does a colleague or classmate have a special skill or have knowledge about a subject that may interest others? Plan a virtual learning session. With tools like Skype and Zoom, you’re able to schedule video calls, instant message and share your computer screen.
  4. Office Hours. This can work for both business leaders and teachers. Schedule time for employees or students to ask questions or generate a discussion, using either social media channels or meeting technology. It could be focused on a specific topic or just a general Q&A.
  5. Networking events. Just because you’re not in the office or at school doesn’t mean you can’t meet new colleagues or students. Host a virtual meet and greet event. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people, share stories and learn about your peers. Perhaps even consider starting an employee resource group, such as a veterans or mentoring group.
  6. Show gratitude. Many companies use social media tools. Whether they are for internal use, like Yammer, or for public viewing, like Facebook, a shout out or thank you to your team members is a great way to show appreciation and acknowledge a job well done.
  7. Share fun ideas. Whether you live by yourself, with a roommate or with your family, learning about fun activities to do while social distancing can be a great way to keep employees and peers motivated. Plus it fights boredom! Start a post on social media or an email chain that encourages people to share what they’ve been doing to stay busy and entertained. Whether it’s a new tv show to binge, a fun activity for your kids or an at-home workout, you’re sure to find something that interests you.
